A Coastal Artwork: "Lapstrake Rings of Color"

"Lapstrake Rings of Color" is a vibrant and mesmerizing painting created by Nova Scotia artist Catherine McKinnon.

The coastal painting features an array of concentric circles in a variety of bold colors, set against the light background of a boat hull. McKinnon's boat hull and circles mimic a boat-building technique called "lapstrake."

This involves overlapping the edges of different colored strips of wood to create the form of the boat. As a result, she creates a stunning display of color and texture, with each circle blending into the next.

Another impressive aspect of this colorful abstract work of art is the level of precision and skill required to create the piece. The lapstrake boat-building technique is notoriously difficult to master, as it involves precise measurements and careful attention to detail. McKinnon's creative, whimsical reproduction of the technique in paint is flawless, with each circle perfectly aligned and seamlessly blended.

McKinnon's Use of Color

This boat painting also showcases McKinnon's understanding of color theory and composition. Her places the circles in a careful, considered way. The use of complementary colors, such as orange and blue, adds a sense of balance and harmony to the piece.

Overall, "Lapstrake Rings of Color" is a stunning work of coastal art. It will pair beautifully with your coastal farmhouse decor.

The painting is an example of her mastery of the lapstrake technique, as well as her understanding of color theory and composition. It is a piece that is sure to capture the attention and imagination of anyone who sees it, and is a true gem in the world of modern art.

About the Artist

Catherine McKinnon is a coastal artist from Nova Scotia, Canada. She has always been drawn to the ocean, wooden boats and the visual imagery of sea life. Her coastal art depicts the majesty and beauty of the sea and the boats and ships that navigate its waters.

McKinnon's passion for nautical painting led her to study fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design. During her time there, she continued to explore her interest in the ocean in her drawings and paintings.

She developed her own unique style of art which is semi abstract, yet representational. She particularly leans toward the colors and textures of the sea. As a result, her art reflects this through the use of vibrant sea colors and bold brushstrokes.

In addition to her art, McKinnon is a wooden schooner owner, a sailor and a fiddler. Also an advocate for ocean conservation, she is a "Wavemaker" with Oceana, an international organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans on a global scale.
